Before You Buy
If you’re considering a fabric crate for your beloved fur-buddy, there are a few more things to keep in mind before you press that BUY button.
Let’s examine advantages, what to look for in a high-quality crate and some possible areas of concern.
Advantages Of A Soft Dog Crate
These crates definitely have some noteworthy advantages. They’ve become plenty popular over the years both as a cosy alternative to crates and as a dog carrier.
Many are surprisingly stylish and look pretty snazzy occupying a corner in your home! In addition to their attractive exterior, they have a lot to offer your canine companion.
A Place Of His Own
These stylish dog-caves are private and plush without being too closed-off. A soft crate gives a dog some privacy and a feeling of safety in a big world.
The windows and door flap allow him to see out and come and go as he pleases. Some dogs use it as a refuge when they just want a little space or some peace and quiet.
Crate Training
Some dogs remain in a crate when their owners leave home or are being potty-trained.
Comfortable, versatile, ventilated soft crates are a good option.
There are large sizes to give your pup plenty of space to move while still confining him to a designated safe space.
Collapsible and easy to store
One of the great appeals of these carrier crates is that they’re lightweight and easily stored. For space-saving, you can collapse and hide them at any time.
Unlike hard shell crates, they are light and easy to transport. If you want to transfer your crate from indoors to outdoors to the car and back, fabric carriers are plenty convenient.
Comfy and soft
In contrast to wire mesh or plastic crates, these carriers are cosy and soft.
No sharp edges, splinters or metal base that can hurt your dog. I enjoy the peace of mind knowing my pooch is safe when using one of these.
They can also keep your dog warm and snug.
Lightweight and easy to transport
They’re much lighter than other bulky crates and easy to transport. It’ll not take much effort to move these around as opposed to a large wire mesh that can in itself weigh 10 Kg.
How To Choose The Best Soft Dog Crate
Assembly
One of the most appealing aspects of these crates is their ease of set-up and take-down.
When it's in-use, you want it to be comfortable and safe for your dog. When it’s not in use, it’s nice to collapse it, put it away, or move it out of sight.
If assembling and breaking down your crate is a hassle every time, you probably won’t be too pleased with it.
Luckily, most soft crates are super-easy to assemble and some require no assembly at all!
Comfort
While easy assembly and convenient transport are important, what you really want is a clean, comfortable space your dog will enjoy.
Many crates come with a soft pad or mat in the bottom so your dog can relax with ease.
However, if you find a soft crate you love and it doesn’t have a mat, you can always add your own.
You might want to switch it up, using your pup’s favourite blanket when it’s chilly and swapping it for a soft cooling mat in warmer months.
Materials
Most soft crates are made with durable but soft fabric and includes a frame of either steel or PVC. You want to look for materials that are high-quality, durable and easy to clean.
Waterproof covers are ideal as they can be easily washed and kept fresh.
The structure materials should be sturdy but not difficult to fold and the entire item should be relatively lightweight.
Windows are often made from plastic or mesh. The more tightly-woven the fabric, the less likely it is to rip or tear.
Ventilation & Visibility
Most dogs like to be able to see what’s going on! After all, what fun is a road trip if you can’t take in the pretty scenery?
Mostly, your dog probably wants to keep an eye on you. She looks to you for cues, comfort, and companionship.
Most of these carriers have plenty of window space so your dog doesn’t feel confined or lonely. Typically, the windows are mesh or plastic and they might be a combination of the two.
If it’s not too cold, your dog may prefer the fresh air and ventilation that comes with mesh windows.
Size
One of the most important factors when picking out a crate is the size. It can be hard to eyeball one and guess whether it’s a good fit. So, you’ll want to get your pup’s exact measurements before taking the leap.
Just because a pup can technically fit, that doesn’t mean he’s not cramped.
Your dog should have enough room to stand, stretch and move around.
While most dogs like a den-like feel, something that’s too restricting or closed-off will make any dog feel nervous and rejected.
Buy For Your Future Dog
Because these kinds of crates are so lightweight and easy to fold down, you don’t need to feel nervous about getting a big one.
If your is still growing, get one that will accommodate his full-grown size. That way, you don’t have to size-up as he matures.
Hopefully, your dog’s crate will become a place of safety and comfort for him, so sticking with a familiar one can have its advantages.
A crate that’s plenty large will accommodate all your dog’s growth spurts as well as his many adorable sleeping positions.
Making It Special
Adding some extra touches to your pup’s soft crate is a great idea.
Many people like to put their dog’s favourite stuffed animal, his childhood blanket or his go-to chew toy in the crate to let him know this space is his and his alone.
These items can also be comforting if your dog is alone or in an unfamiliar environment.
Mostly, your dog wants a clean, cool, cosy place that feels familiar and safe.
You can make his crate special by keeping his mat fluffed and washed, adding a cooling pad in summer months, or placing his precious teddy bear in the corner.
When A Soft Dog Crate Isn’t Best
There are a few situations where a soft crate might not be your best option.
While this type of carrier definitely has its benefits, it’s probably not suitable for all dogs.
Destructive Dogs
If you have a rambunctious puppy or a pooch that gets the urge to crate-destruct when he’s nervous, a fabric one won’t serve you - or him - very well.
The soft texture of a fabric crate will probably be too tempting for any dog who likes to chew, tear, or dig in his spare time.
It’s worth considering whether your dog has crate-anxiety when purchasing a carrier. A heavy-duty hard-shell crate is probably best for a destructive dog.
Easy to chew
Paws, jaws, teeth everywhere..Remember your best friend’s purpose in life..If it can be chewed, it’ll be chewed. Practically it’s an invitation to a munching party.
If your dog is intent on escaping the crate, they’ll have no problem with a soft one. However, you might try a chew toy to distract your puppy.
A Pup Still In Training
If your pup is still in potty training, or if your senior has difficulty controlling his bladder, a soft crate probably isn’t ideal.
The fabric is going to absorb those unpleasant odours and get trashed pretty quickly. On the other hand, a hard crate can be cleaned in an instant with some wet wipes or a soapy towel.
Also, have you ever tried to clean puppy poop off of mesh? Trust us - you don’t want to!
Travel Safety
There is some debate over whether a soft carrier is suitable for car travel.
The argument against them is that they aren’t tough enough to protect your pet from an accident or even an abrupt stop.
Because they’re made of soft fabric and breathable mesh, these carriers don’t offer much in the way of safety in case of an auto accident.
Even at minor collision, your dog may be hurled forward dangerously through the soft mesh.
However, a soft crate that keeps your dog in place is definitely safer than no crate at all.
Just remember that being easily collapsible is one of the selling points of a soft carrier, so they’re not exactly meant to protect your pet from injury.

Airline Travel
Soft crates could be used for airline travel as long as they match IATA requirements and the specific airline regulations for size, height, width and ventilation.

What to watch out for with soft crates?
Hygiene
Soft crates are not the easiest when it comes cleaning. You might have to end up washing the fabric after each tiny accident.
Taking the drying time into account as well, it won’t be my favourite pass time activity.
Not a permanent home
I’d not prefer to use the soft crates as a permanent home. The built is not as strong as wire crates which can withstand a torrent of jaw and paw activity. However, it still is my go to crate for short trips, training and events.
Attention to straps
FAQ
They aren't designed to keep your dog safe in the unfortunate case of a car accident or crash.
However, they are perfectly safe for home, outdoors, crate training and most transport.
Soft crates come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some have frames made of fiberglass or metal and you can easily fold them by pushing in the right place to collapse the crate.
With most fabric crates, you can remove the cover and wash it in the machine. You also want to regularly wash the mat or blanket in the bottom of the crate.
To determine the right-sized crate for your dog, measure him from the top of his head to the floor. Next, you will measure him from his nose to the end of his tail.
Compare these measurements to the crate dimensions. Keep in mind that your pup should have plenty of room to stand, turn around and stretch out.
Final Verdict
For anyone looking to regularly set up, transport, or break down a crate, a soft version might be worth a look.
Soft dog crates are sturdy but light, easily collapsible and plenty comfortable for your dog.
If you’ve got an extra large dog who needs a space of his own, the Fandrea Pet Carrier in XXXL might be a great choice. It’s dimensions are 102 X 69 X 79.
And if you have a pup that’s a little rough-and-tumble, you might do well with the Veehoo Folding Soft Dog Crate. It’s one of the sturdiest options and its tightly-woven honeycomb mesh stands up to wear and tear.
